Well, today has been a b*tch so far, and I’ll describe just how much of a b*tch it’s been at the end of this PhotoPost. It’s a workday, and I’m at home, waiting for a plumber before the whole dining room starts filling up with water, but I’ll show you some photos that got me in a little bit of a Christmas mood last week when it rained a bit overnight first.
A while back it rained pretty hard overnight, and while driving to work I got one of those brainstorms I’m always getting that if I had packed my camera with me I could have gotten some real neat reflections of the stoplights in the slick streets, washed by the rain the previous night. I kept this in mind, and it rained a bit last week, so on my 5:30am drive into work along Sepulveda/Willow I stopped a couple of places and shot some photos. This first one is of the reflection of a green traffic signal over the Avalon and Sepulveda intersection.
As the cars drove across the intersection, I got the reflection of their brake lights on the wet sheen, giving a sort of Christmassy look with the red of the brakelights and the green of the traffic signal. I wasn’t specifically thinking “Christmas” until I got home later that day and took a look at the photos.
This is my favorite, shot at the intersection of Willow and Pacific in Long Beach. The intersection is where rioters torched the DMV building on the evening I had an appointment there back during the riots of 92. Long Beach is rather deserted in this area at night, or more specifically, early morning. The green is the traffic signal, and you can see the actual signal reflected in the puddle. The red in this shot is a store sign above the highway in red neon.
Another red/green shot of the same inersection. I’m standing on the island in the middle of Sepulveda Blvd in my coat with my camera. A police cruiser came by, and the officer sort of stared at me and my camera, but he didn’t stop. Sometimes at odd hours in “in the wrong place” I get questioned by police as to what and why I’m photographing, which is a troublesome bother that happens to a lot of photographers these days.
Another shot of red brakelights and a green stoplight. The shots of the yellow and red stoplight reflections didn’t enthuse me as much as the green ones. I love the look of the wet asphalt. This particular part of the street was recently repaved.
This is a wider view of the intersection with the neon sign. These shots aren’t really “artistic” or anything. I’m just intrigued by lights and shadows, and slick roads. I think these photos would have been neater if it had rained harder, but they still seem a bit “Christmassy”, don’t you think. (Sorry, if I’m offending anyone by using the word “Christmas”. I’m an old man, and that’s what I call the holiday.)
The other day I was taking shots in my media room and got this interesting angle of Betty Boop at the malt shop looking somewhat dreamily at what appears to be a giant skull. Since King Kong was just released, I’ll title this “Betty on Skull Island at the Malt Shop with Kong’s skull”.
This and the image below were posted on this blog last Christmas. The image above is the whiteboard in my office, ca. 1995 or so. The “letters” are electrical symbols. I used to “draw” this greeting every year. We’ve downsized and I’m in a smaller office, and my lone whiteboard is filled with work assignments. But this used to intrigue my vendors and customers. If you’re in the electrical industry, this is pretty neat.
Also from last year’s blog, my “Christmas Card” (Or “Holiday Card” for those of you who find the word Christmas offensive…..I think the “debate” is senseless myself., but I’m a traditionalist and raised Christian to boot.) The photo is a composite of two photos shot out my back door showing the Christmas decorations (Holiday decorations) on the house facing us on the cul de sac. It was raining, and the “round lights” are my flash reflected in the droplets.
Now, here is my “sob story” about why I’m home blogging instead of at work. This morning, I went out to the car and it wouldn’t start. Now this is my 1999 Eclipse convertible, bought almost new, and it has never given me any problems. The car has not started only twice, which was caused by my closing the door on the seatbelt which kept the dome light on all night and was corrected by a jump from my roommate’s car. I got a jump from him this morning, and it turns out I needed a new battery. The corner auto repair shop, at which I got it checked after 8am when they opened, showed me the test meter, and the battery was just going bad, so I got a new one at the Auto Zone retailers across the street, and the auto repair shop put it in the car for only 10 bucks labor. I like our local auto shops. They are all quite honest, and the “competition” since there are many along Lomita Blvd where I live, is to see who can be nicer and more honest with the clientele.
Before I even took the car in to get it “fixed”, I went to make a phone call to tell work that I wouldn’t be in today because of the car, and I stepped in wet carpet by the phone kiosk in our dining room. There seems to be a busted pipe somewhere under the house, and water is seeping up under the floorboards. I can hear water “running” somewhere, possibly in the house that shares a wall with ours, but our water pressure in the house seems to be okay. The water is seeping onto the kitchen linoleum, and it has spread quite a bit throughout the dining room. Luckliy this is on the other side of the house, and my rooms are dry (right now, as I write anyway.) I went to the rental management office after getting my new battery installed in the car, and was told that they don’t handle the housing project anymore, since now somebody else owns the building. Gloria, with whom I will miss “doing business” gave me the new owner’s name and number on a post it, and I called the new owner, sloshing through the wet carpet in my shoes, after I ate breakfast and went home. Seems the plumber is on another job in downtown L.A. and won’t be here for a couple of hours.
I just watched Titanic again a few weeks ago when they released the new DVD, and I’m thinking that is seems as if my house is slowly sinking underwater. So, as I said previously, today has been a b*tch so far, let me tell ya.
Now I’ll open up my image editing program and see if I can superimpose a “Christmas Tree” on one of the red and green reflection photos above.
EDIT: 2:45 pm. Well, I just cracked a beer. This is bad, and it’s going to take a while. So I’m going to relax and get drunk. It’s the decent thing to do. The new owner and the plumber just left. They were here for about an hour. I snapped the photo above about an hour before they got here. The dark spots in the rug are where I’ve stepped, and water has come right up through the shag. I also took photos of the sea in the kitchen, but don’t want to show them here on the blog because the floor and refrigerator look reallly dirty and I’m ashamed. I’ve just been shamed enough by the fact that the kitchen looks so bad. I figured the new owner might just “stop by” after I called him this morning, so I did at least vacuum the carpet, and clean up Joel’s piles of mail from all the flat surfaces, and got rid of the empty beer bottles and cleaned some of the countertops in the kitchn. The new owner and the plumber came in the house, and I told Anward, the new owner, a roly poly guy with a smile that never leaves his lips, that the situation had gotten much worse than it was this morning. The two guys look for problems. It seems like it’s in the wall. It’s not a hot water pipe but a cold water pipe that is leaking. Now, the plumber eventually turns off the main, something I should have probably thought to do, but I didn’t. The two men had a conversation about the pipes. The plumber, Frank, was half deaf. They tried to find the crawlspace into the attic. It happens that it’s in the other part of the duplex, and we share the same roof and attic. Anward wants to eventually recarpet the house, paint the walls, landscape the outside, and all I can think of is how long will I not have water and can I take a shower tomorrow morning. They punched holes in the walls. They sloshed through the river in the kitchen. I’d say lake, but the water was moving. They’ll be here tomorrow. Anward has the key, so I can go to work tomorrow. They’ll tear the place apart when I’m not here. Oh what a Merry Christmas I’m having. Well, I’d better have a sip of that cold beer. There. Ahhhhh. I’ll just forget about it. I went to the bathroom, and when I turned on the faucet to wash my hands, you got it, no water. So I have to go outside and turn on the main to wash. I’ll have to turn on the main to shower. I’d better turn it on a few hours before so there’s enough water in the hot water tank. I’m upset, but sh*t happens. I already mopped up the water in the kitchen. The plumber will bring a wetvac tomorrow. Along with his drills and pipe cutting equipment. This is all so deja vu. Just two years ago we had a whole new tub installed and they guys retiled the tub, so set up a tile cutting machine outside. I stayed home for three days while they were in and out, and I took showers in the front house, which was vacant at the time. Ho Ho Ho. Anward said he’d probably have to raise the rent. This was after I’d already let him know I’ve been here for 12 years and he’s the third owner to come and go. I told him he had to do what he had to do, but I was broke, and didn’t want to have to move until Joel died. (My roommate and I actually joke about his cancer. It’s about all you can do) As he left, I told him to forget about landscaping. It sounds as if re plumbing my whole house, which is basically what they have to do, since the existing pipes are galvanized and not copper, and are embedded in the concrete floor of the house, cost quite enough. I mentioned that Anward was still smiling. “I’m sorry for your inconvenience.” He told me. “I’m sorry you just buy the place, and then it starts to fall apart.” I rejoindered. “And you’re still smiling.” I added. “I don’t feel too good myself. If you have to raise the rent, it’ll be because of the new plumbing, don’t worry about new shrubbery.”
Well, at least the beer is cold. The electricity still works. (Maybe I shouldn’t have mentioned it.)

Nifty photos. I like the red and green effects.
What a bummer about your day so far! Once, my dorm room flooded in the middle of the night. It was when I was living on the 11th floor. All of a sudden, I could hear what sounded like rain against my window, but it was really loud. So I got up, and it looked like rain was coming in through my window (which was right over my desk). This was before my computer, thank goodness, so I only had some papers and things there. So I pushed everything away from the window and walked to the bathroom to get some paper towels. This was around 2 am, I think. When I got back to my room, the water had already spread halfway across my desk. So I called the duty RA to come and take care of it. Turns out someone on the 13th floor had left water running in the custodial closet (where we keep the brooms and mops and whatnot) and it leaked all the way through the rooms (1305, 1205, 1105…) until the 8th floor! But I was the first one to wake up and notice it! Custodial people were in and out of my room all morning, trying to get it cleaned up. It was such a disaster. But thankfully I woke up so I could move all my stuff (clothes and carpet, too), so nothing got ruined. Didn’t get much sleep that night…
Hope your day turns around! There are worse things that blogging all day, though, right?

love the traffic light photos! they were well worth standing in the rain for- tho i hope you wore saftey yellow!!!!! may the plumber come b4 you float away!:heartbeat:
Yikes! My sympathies to you! With any luck, the new managers will try to be on the ball about things and get your flooding problem squared away sometime soon…
Love the street photos of green and red. Very much in the Christmas season. Hope the water problem is fixed by now.
haha my roommate the “perfect” roommate…far from it. She’s the exact opposite of everything I described…actually if I wasn’t so modest I would say that I described myself, but I’m not going to say that. Anyways, yeah I was a little “mad” about what heppened and I thank you for keeping in touch. I understand that you have other blogs and I just welcome you whenever you stop by. (You’re free to come along with me on my vacation…or at least stop by that way we can both learn to surf
.) Hope all is well. peace out and take care. autumn
Hiya Mike!
The green & red light pics are shiny and festive! :coolman:
How dare you say “Christmas!” Sorry… leftover Sarcasm from my recent blog entries.:fun:
That is really horrid about the busted pipe and the waiting around for the repair guy. I hate that!
Titanic is my favorite comedy.
BE blessed!
Merry Messiahmas!
Steve :spinning:
I’m sorry, Mike, about the plumbing. I’m sure it’ll be great when it’s finished to have new carpet, linoleum (hold out for kitchen flooring too!) etc. You’re right about the inconvenience though!
Make sure they leave the walls open long enough to dry out really well so you don’t have a mold problem begin – in that respect it’s a good thing your landlord isn’t trying to weasel out of new carpet.
Your night photos are terrific. well done! I always thought that we have Christmas, really, all year because of the red and green lights we have on the road… so you can get in the Christmas spirit in July if you like
I can anyway . . .
Then, dun dun dun, I looked at that wet picture of your carpet and it made me very sad. We have had our share of plumbing leaks so I know the feeling. Having a beer seems to be the right thing for you to do right now, better than a panic attack.
And… it could have been worse… it could have been an upstairs toilet… we’ve had that twice in this house… no, three times. We have one toilet that has not leaked yet. Those are the worst… We had a lousy builder so the problems showed up later…. ugh never mind, long boring story.
I certainly hope your plumbing problem is an easy fix with out too much more agitation or inconvenience to you.
I do like those Eclipses. My mom had a RED 1991 Eagle Talon for a few years. She was in her 70′s when she drove it, heehee. She used to say “You don’t get IN this car, you Put it ON” Same kind of car, I think.
Dear Mike.
My day suddenly seems much better. I am so sorry for all the problems right here before Christmas. I think maybe you need a couple more cold beers. Sounds like a multiple beer issue to me.
I am also sorry to hear about your roomie. That is a tough one. I do hope that tomorrow gets better. Maybe it will be an easy one to find and fix. Okay yes I am an optimist.
Good Luck.
Kat
whats with internet island?
im not interewsted
*interested*

Hi Mike,
Those pictures are great, they really are Christmasy. I love those. I think they worth getting rained on for too.
Your car and water problems , I’m sorry. Once my home got flooded by alot of rain from an overflowing creek. It ruined the floors, carpets, pictures, books, all of my personal things, or things that cant be replaced I should have said.I hope this guy repiars that soon. It is enough to drive someone to drink! I also hope your car is fixed soon.
I am feeling better and still trying to think of a good fantasy vacation. I have visted a few Islanders who have written on this . All were interesting. I met some nice people through this blogring.Lots of people are probably busy with Chraistmas ect. It is Christams, always has been why do we have to change it? All this politcal correctness is getting to me. If someone wants to call it something diofferent thats fine too,but why shouldn’t people who call it Christmas have that right also?
As for Tookie Wiliams, I dont know. Its hard to say Im a pacifist and then support the death penalty. Its hard for me to decide on some cases.
Thanks for your comments on that.
I will be doing my vacation soon and I’ll let you know.
Thanks for visiting me.
Peace and Love:)
…..”So I’m going to relax and get drunk. It’s the decent thing to do.”…
Damn… it’s ALWAYS the decent thing to do.
I”m sorry, Mike, I haven’t read and responded as much as I’ve meant to. I love your blog, the honesty of it, the way I can see by reading that this is YOU… not a fake “you” you’ve created for the sake of hte internet.
Mike, you Rock My Socks. I promise I will read more often from this day forward… as often as my insane work schedule will allow. *grin* I work a fulltime job, as asst. manager of a kitchen, and a part time job, as a dishwasher/cook at another local restaurant… if you can call a Kentucky Fried Chicken a restaurant, LOL.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas… and, for the record, while I am not an old man, I still call the holiday by this name… LOL…, my percussion professor at university would stop playing “Christmas” music in his office for the month of January… but in February, it always sparked up again…. that man very much influenced the way I think of Christmas, and I thank you because your photos do the same….. and while I am not in the “electrical” business, I used to be the (supposed) master electrician for my university theatre department, so I understand a bit of what your “Merry Christmas” said… LOL.
I’m sorry about your roommate’s illness. I hope he’s a fighter, and good luck to him (and you) in dealing with his cancer. I have had dreams lately that I have cancer, but I believe it only to be the workings of my employer, who believes in organic everything, and no drinking or smoking.
Merry Christmas, Michael Nyiri.
I like the pictures. Green and red. . . what better colors to light this time of the year! I love Titanic. . . one of the best movies ever made!
Wow–I would never even have thought of picking up my camera to take those photos, and look how cool they are! You’re right, Christmasy in an unexpected way. You never know where you’re going to find art or beauty until you just look around, huh?
As for the appropriate seasonal greeting, I’m partial to Happy Holidays in general, Merry Christmas in particular. I was also born and raised a Christian, and Christmas is the holiday I most celebrate at this time of year. But keeping in mind that there are a host of holidays that fall throughout November-January, I think that Happy Holidays is just fine. If I know I’m greeting a fellow Christian, then I certainly wish him a blessed Christmas. Otherwise, it’s “Enjoy your holidays!” from me. When I hear that, I don’t interpret it as something anti-Christmas or anti-Christian. That phrase includes Christmas, after all. I know you didn’t ask my opinion, but I was bold enough to offer it anyway. And to you, I’d definitely say merry, merry Christmas! I hope Santa brings you a better tomorrow!
About the Internet Island topic–can it be that I don’t have a fantasy vacation? I’ve thought and thought about it, and I just can’t come up with one. . .wonder what that means?
Howdy from Texas! My good friend Tom Bob is coming to visit. He’s from CA and he’s gay. So no hanky panky this weekend.
Hey, I did my island thing and it’s on my site. I still don’t know how to link so I have an entry on II with the date. You will enjoy, I will assure you!
Only us xangans with wide imaginations would stand out in a median at 6:00am to get Christmas colored pictures and think seriously about it! I love it. And you had intent!
I dislike plumbing problems as plumbers are so expensive. I’ve had my share as of late. No floods but just an old house. Which brings me to another subject. I would suggest buying a home in Southern Ca but I believe it’s a moot issue. You have to be a millionaire. I have another good friend who is a realtor in Long Beach area who I can refer you to! If you decide to, indulge me with a referral! Hugs, nanalana:wave:
Good Morning Mike. Hope today goes better than yesterday and that you managed to get that shower this morning. I do hate a day that begins without a shower. If you need a laugh I added another pet story to my site. Hugs
Kat
Makes me think more about all of my physical belongings and what would happen to the essence of me if they were gone. Royal royal bummer. But really neat photos. Makes me feel all Christmassy and Eye-talian!
dear mike,
hope today finds you dryer, lots. i can certainly sympathize. in bangkok, years ago, in rainy season two huge apartment buildings for embassy people started having water pour through the walls, out of light fixtures, though wall sockets, and everywhere else. turns out the waterproof paint the builder used to cover the concrete block construction wasn’t. the australian country sent the wrong paint. this moldy misery lasted for the entire monsoon season. absolutely nothing we could do for it except provide a place for people to store their good things to protect them from mold and wait it out, let the buildings dry out completely after the monsoons and then paint it with the real deal.
as always, your remarks on my poetry are treasured. you’ve been there from the beginning with that, always encouraging and applauding quietly. that’s meant a lot to me. thanks.
peace, brother

poor baby
I hope all is better for you today
if not…get another beer
your photos are amazing…
Plumbing woes are the worst. But as you say, at least the beer is cold. Loved the red and the green, this time of year especially.
I feel for you – it seems that the holidays don’t stop bad things from happening. My cousin’s mother-in-law just passed over to the other side, so not much Christmas for them, it seems.
I like the reflections – very Christmassy, indeed! I have some like that, too. Street reflections are very intriguing.
Good luck with the holiday plumbing, (tongue-in-cheek).
My favourite is the 4th photo from the top, I like the potholes, the lights, it looks like an other world, fantasy, could be a spacescape.
And I hope your landlord will cover any water damage! You sound way calmer than I would be if we were flooded…
Still, it’s a day off, and between crises, relaxing…
xo
Love the street lights photo, ive never had to much of a problem with plumbers and i hope you dont either.
