Pasadena has two famous parades each year. The New Year, of course, brings the Rose Parade, and a lot of "locals", me included, would never step foot in the city of Pasadena during the Rose Parade. However, the "anti-Rose Parade" is the DooDah Parade, which was held this past Sunday afternoon, on Raymond and Colorado Blvds. in Pasadena, under a hot sun with beautiful weather. Here are just some of the many highlights of the 2005 edition of the Doo Dah Parade.

This long legged beauty is probably a guy. You have to watch closely, or just forget about perception and reality when you attend the DooDah Parade. None of these photos are enhanced or modified in any way. I haven't even cropped or trimmed them. I probably could have gone out in the street, like some of the other photographers, but I liked my vantage point standing in front of a building under an awning, because it was quite warm.

This is the Claude Rains Memorial 20 Man Invisible Marching Drill Team, which is always a hit. You really can't see most of the participants, because, of course, they are invisible. Some of the "acts" performing at the Doo Dah have been coming out for most of the parade's history. The woman standing next to me was a participant in the parade 15 years ago.

The "Ferret Folk" come out (without their ferrets, which are illegal as pets in California) to protest the fact that they can't keep ferrets as pets. In front of the big ferret float here was a female "ferret dancer" and some folks with poodles "dressed up" to resemble ferrets. There are also quite a few "dog groups" including the weiner dogs and basset hounds.

Grand marshalls of this years parade were the Barbecue and Hibachi Grill Team, who shoot hot dogs into the crowd with these "bazookas". They grill em and they shoot em, and then "condiment ladies' pass out the mustard and ketchup. Some people eat the hot dogs even when they bounce off the pavement. Between all the candy, tortillas, and hot dogs, the real dogs on the parade route get quite a meal.

This is the hearse carrying the body of Lee Marvin, and is the centerpiece of my favorite marching group, The Bastard Sons of Lee Marvin. The sign on the hearse says: "Rent a Marvin Movie Tonight". There weren't as many "bastard sons" this year as in years past.

Here one of the bastard sons of Lee Marvin (pulling a little covered wagon which has "Paint Your Wagon" painted on the side) regaling the crowd with Marvin's achievements. I called out "I was born under a wandrin' star" but this bastard didn't understand the reference, to the song Lee sung in the 1969 musical "Paint Your Wagon".

The girl to my right couldn't stop laughing at this guy, who is attempting to paint a picture while walking down the parade route. I saw him two years ago, and I swear, he's working on the very same painting.

There are actually some marching bands, including the "East L.A. College Marching Band" which knew how to play, but the main draw are the 'drill teams' including the Men Of Leisure drill team, who "nap" on cue along the route. Their drummer follows, seated in his La-Z-Boy.

The Doo Dah has inflatables, just like Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. Here is a flying saucer symbolizing the "Alien" society, which also included robots and spacemen of many ilks.

The unofficial theme of this year's parade must have been alternative fuels, because there weren't as many automobiles as usual, (except for the Edsels, which always begin the parade) and there were lots of bicycles. Two guys are pedalling the "wheel" and the fish is manned by a bunch of guys. You can see the weiners and tortillas on the pavement.

Everybody loves the motorized couch, which traversed the route a couple or three times. It actually moves pretty fast, and I'm lucky to have gotten a couple of good shots. There are brake lights on the back of the couch, and at one point, a skateboarder hung on to the back and used it as propulsion.

Uncle Fester and his bubble machine works the crowd. During Doo Dah, Hallowe'en,  Thanksgiving, and Christmas all blend together in an amalgam of Holiday Cheer. Santa was even pedalling a bike down the route.

This rather intricate float was pulled by a phalanx of Hare Krishnas. I don't know whether or not they were "real" or some joke group, as I wanted to snap a photo of the float itself and missed the banner in front of it. The Doo Dah Parade is an equal opportunity offender.

Here is a sweet belly dancer. She's strutting her stuff in almost 90 degree heat. I always watch the parade from the beginning of the route, which snakes down Raymond, and then makes a right on Colorado Blvd. (the street where the more famous "Rose Parade" is held). I'm sure these guys and gals were tired out and sweaty at the end of the route. The parade takes two hours, and starts around 11:30am, although this year, the beginning was more like noon.

George Bush made six or seven appearances. Here, he is in jail clothing. He also was seen holding a bottle of motor oil, and was marching with the "big money" guys. I don't think there are many Republicans in attendance at the Doo Dah parade.

Our governor also showed up, looking pretty good, even though he lost all of his special initiatives in our special election a few weeks ago. He marched with teachers and firemen.

I've got lots more photos, and will be adding them all to a new photo folder either with my Yahoo account or with the PhotoSite on Homestead, which I have but have never used. My Webshots Gallery is filled with 3000 photos, so right now this blog is the only place where you can see my photos of the 2005 Doo Dah Parade in Pasadena. This is the "Well Hung Suspension Team" and they were actually hanging from their backs, or so it looked. A Tattoo and Piercing parlor sponsered this float, and these guys looked like something out of a Clive Barker novel.

I also shot video. My camera switches from stills to video quite easily. I will go through the video to cull some stills for another photo post. I admit these photos aren't that great, but at least they give a little bit of the feel of Pasadena's Doo Dah Parade.

  • That looks like a realy fun parade. We would never have a parade like that around here. Everyone is too uptight :nono: heheheheeee.

  • Hi Mike,

I have heard of the DooDah parade and I think I may have seen photoe or film clips of it before. Yours are great. Somehow, perfect pictures of this parage would not seem appropriate. Isn't that against everything the parade stands for?

    Nancy

  • Weird! I've never heard of that before. Of course, I'd never heard of the Rose parade, either, since I live in the somewhat secluded Midwest. :) Looks like it'd be a really fun thing to go to, though. Thanks for sharing these pictures! I love your photo posts.

  • Mike,

Awww... That looked like it would've been great to go to! I think the photos are good. I wish they would have a parade like that around here. It would definitely be something worth going to.

  • i wanna gooooooo!!!!! sounds a little like the philly's mummers parade only wilder!!!! (and the fact that the mummers parade happens new years day in the freezing cold!)

  • Dear Mike,

It was rather warm on Sunday, so I just aimlessly drove down the 60 Fwy. to feel some sort of breeze, then drove down Valley Blvd. from who knows where and saw a pretty large replica of the statue of liberty ... which I had no clue existed ... and since I was enjoying the drive didn't take a picture.

I'm glad to read that you enjoyed yourself at the parade though, I have to admit that when I woke up Sunday I was tempted to call to accompany you ... but being a late sleeper it was already 10 a.m. Maybe next time ...

    Love,
    Liz

  • Mike, this is great!  Too bad nothing like this happens in Oklahoma!  What fun!

  • Wow, Mike. You re-did your blog since I visited last, and now I can post my comments. In the past, you thought I "didn't care" to leave a comment, but I just couldn't find the Leave a Comment link. Not all of us use the same browsers or computers, so something went haywire on my reception of your old version. (I have a Mac and use Safari or Firefox.)

Now, I say nice job. And I loved the pix of your parade.

I agreed with a lot of what you had to say on Socrates Café and left another comment there questioning the stringent rules. I'm uncomfortable with them and felt compelled to let my feelings out. I'm hoping I don't feel strangled there and decide to opt out. You were absolutely right about people spending their work days on computers and how hard it is to find the time to write a Socratic essay (with questions!) in our "free" time.

Anyway, glad to come back and make your re-aquaintance and we'll see each other at the Café.

  • You guys out in CA know how to do things right.  LOL  That looked like fun.  I like the George Bush in prison garb guy.

  • I like the couch! I wanted to BE a belly dancer when I was a kid and saw them in Disney World, Florida LOL.

You wanted to see my old poetry page? Well I finally got around to finding the direct link so you dont have to search through the construction of my page. http://members.tripod.com/~Maria_R/scaste.html There is at least one link that is wrong, sorry about that. This is the link to my archives of my archived old page LOL how about THAT? http://members.tripod.com/~Maria_R/archive.html I dont know how these links are, as its been years sense I've checked the archived poems page. Let me know if you see one you like

The DooDah Parade looks like something I would have enjoyed indeed! Thanks for posting the pics, so we could enjoy the Parade from afar. The ferret is amazing!

    BE blessed!

  • This looks like a blast! Oh my goodness. We have a "how Berkeley can you be" parade in September. A parade of decorated cars, streakers, all sorts of craziness.

  • Just browsing blogs and stopped by your site.  I had to laugh, I'm a California girl transplanted in Minnesota...I remember the Doo Dah Parade, it was the only parade worth going to!  I never went to the Rose Parade...I was never one for sleeping on the sidewalk.

    Have a great night,

    Dawna

  • Your photos as always are quite awesome
and thak you for sharing...looks like much fun

  • RYC on Peter Noone: Yes, I have blogged about it before. If you look in my index under Peter, you will find a 3 part story of how I met him. I actually do not blog about how well I know him, but he really is one of the nice things in my life. I sent him a link to my Thanksgiving blog, and he did read it.

I sell merchandise for him at shows occasionally. Sometimes I assist his tour coordinator. That is what I was doing in ND over the weekend. Sometimes I fill in for her when she needs time off. I actually like that better. Peter is very intelligent and very interesting. It is great to have time to just sit and talk to him. He is also very, very funny.

By the way, Herman's Hermits weren't really "second wave." They were pretty concurrent with the Beatles. Peter used to hang out with John Lennon quite a bit. Did you know that HH actually outsold the Beatles for 2 years, 1965 being one of them? Also, something that a lot of people don't know - the Rolling Stones used to open for HH.

Can you tell that I enjoy knowing Peter Noone? It's one of the more interesting things in my life and one of the most fun.

  • The pictures are wonderful.
They make me feel like I can see the parade myself.

  • The DooDah Parade looks like a salute to creativity and free speech. I love the "anti Rose Parade" aspect. Reminds me of Fasching in Germany where many of the floats have political themes. Thanks for sharing!

  • Aw, Mike. It's so BORING here in Michigan... You have all the fun stuff there.

  • That parade looks like so much fun!  I loved seeing all the offbeat floats and people that walk in the parade.

  • This parade looks like an absolute blast to be part of. I think, I would have most liked to participate as a sleeper, although the painter looks pretty fun, too. Or a stripper. I donno. Of course female strippers never get the same appreciation as male strippers, even in drag, so maybe that's out.

I'm beginning to understand the feelings you were having a few days ago about not being able to get around. It's quite clear that you and I both have our hands full, and Michelle, too, and that getting around to our own members is difficult to begin. The guilt of not being able to get into my other rings is growing (although, I was able to work it out due to common topics this week). Because we're both in the same situation, I can surely understand yours. I say we each do the best we can, and leave it at that. What do you say?

  • Hi Mike,
This looks like so much fun! So colorful and quirky, love it, glad you got pictures to share..
    I love this song!
Such a good message, such were many songs from that generation..
I enjoyed these pictures and the parade..

    Peace and love:)

  • Hi, Mike! I've returned from my trip to the wannabe Caribbean...the Gulf of Mexico. We detoured d/t Tropical Storm Gamma. All was nice. I'll elaborate on my site.

My sis told me about the Doo Dah Parade! She lives in Pasadena and there is where I visit often. I happened upon the Rose Bud Parade a few years ago while visiting. All such serious cherubs on trikes and bikes! Fun all the same.

    Hugs...Lana:spinning:

  • Hello just wanted to give you a quick heads
up. The text in your post seem to be running
off the screen in Firefox. I'm not sure if
this is a formatting issue or something to do with internet browser compatibility but I

Hope you get the problem fixed soon. Many thanks
