It's "past" time for a PHOTOPOST. Last year, from February to Summertime, I shot lots of photos in Southern California for a photo series I call "Small Town America in Lost Angeles." Most people probably think about L.A. as a "big city" and we do have a rather large downtown area with lots of tall buildings. When I moved to L.A. in the late 1950s this was not the case, and there are still areas of th"Los Angeles" area that actually evoke the spirit of "small town America" that Walt Disney had in mind when he created "Main Street USA" in Disneyland. There are five "folders" in my Webshots Gallery with photos in the series. San Pedro, Bellflower, Torrance and Lomita, Monrovia, and Glendora. I posted some PHOTOPOSTS in 2004 when I took the photos. I don't believe any of the following photos, culled from all the above folders and also from Catalina Island and images on my computer, have been featured on this blog before.e
This is the "logo" or "header" photo for the series of "Small Town America in Lost Angeles." It is a composite photo, with images of the L.A. skyline, with a Foster's Freeze, drug store, old clock, American Flag, and gumball machine taken from other photos taken around southern California "main streets."
The Fox Drug Store in old downtown Torrance, shot on Easter of last year, and why the place is closed in the middle of the day. There are a lot of cities and towns in Los Angeles County that are actively "retrofitting" their main streets to bring back the "nostalgic" look of an earlier time before WalMarts and malls. Old Torrance used to be a pretty bad area, with lots of squalor and crime, but the area was revived a few years ago, and is now rather nice. There are still a lot of abandoned buildings, but at least the storefronts are nice to look at.
This is one of my "signature" shots where I try to shoot the subject through branches or leaves, glass, etc. It is the flag flying on the Torrance Post Office shot through the branches of a tree on the street in front of the building.
This is an old jeweller's clock sitting on the lawn of the Lomita Civic Center. Normally, these clocks are on the Main Streets themselves, and Narbonne Ave. is one of Lomita's two "Main Streets". But this is on the lawn of the Library and City Hall. It was placed there only about 10 years ago, so is not an "original" but it's neat anyway.
Now we are in San Pedro, on 6th Street, which has been featured in lots of TV shows and movies. A lot of the older buildings, like the Brown Brothers Building shown here, have been redecorated and have the flavor of "small town America" that was lost in the 60s when a lot of the older storefronts were "modernized". I was on jury duty in San Pedro in March of 2004, and took my camera in with me a couple of days, and shot all over the area by the courthouse, which is "historical", along with the famous San Pedro port, which was quite rowdy back when there was a Naval base nearby.
This is part of the full size diorama in front of the Orange County Fair in 2004,depicting a scene from the teens or 20s in the 20th Centrury.
The town of Monrovia, CA, has some neat older streets, and this is what the outside of one of the shops looks like. The veteran is a "dummy" sitting on the barrel. Depiste the signs which are for food, this is an auto parts store.
Also in Monrovia, this is Myrtle Ave, which is an old "Main Street" which has been revitalized in recent years. I took these photos of Monrovia on a real hot day, and it was neat just strolling among the tree lined streets. Monriovia is nestled up in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountain range, and you can see some of them in the background of this shot.
Now we're down in Manhattan Beach. This is the "roundhouse" on the end of the Manhattan Beach concrete pier. The whole Southern California coastline has a rich history, and a lot of the older buildings, which were made of wood, were destroyed in many storms and because of time. I believe this building was built in the 20s. The pier is quite long, as are a lot of the piers on the coast. Fishermen line the sides, and the roundhouse is now a restaurant and a small museum.
Now, back up in the foothills, on Glendora Blvd. in Glendora, my "last" childhood hometown, before moving back to Rosemead and then to the South Bay in the early 70s. Glendora is also a "mountain town" and is below the San Gabriels, right by where the road leads up to Mt. Baldy. I love the topiary look of the trees lining the main street of Glendora.
Here is one of the churches further up Glendora Blvd. Glendora is a sleepy little town, built on the famous "Route 66" and is still somewhat "removed" from a lot of the modernization that has swept the country in the past twenty years or so. It is a nice "escape" for a Sunday drive when the weather is nice.
And now we're "26 miles across the sea" on Santa Catalina island, a "tourist trap" since the early 20s. The buildings are all original, and since the town of Avalon is quite small, no autos or trucks are seen on the streets, only golf carts, like the ones further up the street in this picture. The spire of the yellow hotel on this street attracted me. Liz and I visited Catalina a few months ago, and she checked out this hotel. There was a really nice room (all the rooms were "themed" ) that she liked and next time we go, I thnk we'll spend a day and a half, and rent the room Liz liked so much in this hotel.
This last photo is the Bellflower Diner in Bellflower, which is north of Long Beach, CA. I lived in Bellflower with Pat for a year in the mid 90s, and after she cheated on me and I moved to the garage waiting for our lease to expire on the house in which we lived, I severed all ties to her, including eating at home, and started eating in restaurants again. I had a lot of nice breakfasts here in the Bellflower Diner.
Yes, L.A. is a "big city". But I can always find a little bit of "small town America" if I look hard enough.

dear cute. i wont be clelbrating this post topic, as u know i dont have a creative bone in this little body of mine... but i love you
i love your photo blogs. they take me places i've never been and hope to see someday! i love the older buildings too, and find myself shooting them so they won't go away forever!:)
Nice pictures! I've never been to California, although I've been to Oregon and Washington. My new neighbor is from Camarillo, CA (not sure where that is, exactly). I really appreciate that you seem to love your home so much; it seems similar to my sentiments towards Nebraska. It's nice to see photos from areas off the beaten track for tourists, since I'm sure it wouldn't be likely for me to find these places if I just visited L.A. for a vacation. Thanks for sharing with us!
~Jenny
P.S. I love Van Morrison.
Although, why can't I stop the music anymore? I had another page open besides yours, and they had music playing, too, neither of which I could stop. Didn't sound so pretty combined, I must say.
I loved the pictures. I like the look of small town life. There are few areas in Minneapolis that have a small town feel to it because the neighborhoods have worked hard at maintaining the buildings.
I never dreamed that the small town look existed anywhere near LA. Thanks for sharing the photos. They were great.
ryc: can't believe i didn't think to open the fridge! err... it was in a dry creek bed about 5 feet down (which is about how tall i am- so i could have slid down on my butt to it, but there are lots of prickly things in new mexico! and that town just looked deserted- there were actual ppl living there!
hey, i love these pics. looking at them makes me want to step inside and feel what it's like to be there. i take photos too, i have an old camera (not a digital one) but i can never afford film or having them developed. i'm gonna look at your other pics later but i have homework. take care, charlie
Those are awesome pictures.
It is funny to me to think that other people view the L.A. basin as being all tall buildings and stuff. I guess it makes sense cause I think of New York the same way. I love your photo posts. AS for internet island, i will think on it. But with so many kids i do good to check/write my blog and make a few comments. Have a great week Mike!
Nice photos. It makes me think I should take some of the "city" here...maybe I will do that one weekend.
Dear Mike,
It is nice to discover little areas of the city that still have that feeling of innoncence to them. Though, I must say it was interesting what you said about Catalina ... that would truly be interesting. And this time we at least know a golf cart is a MUST!
Love,
Liz
:heartbeat:Love your photos of small town Lost ANgeles. Great ! Well got to get walking and do my am exercises. :heartbeat:
My CA buddy wildchildeditors sends me a lot of LA pics.

:goodjob: Those are nice pictures! I haven't been to Ca. since I was a small child, but from what you've captured it looks much as I picture it. L.A. is a much nicer, cleaner city than NYC in my eyes. Although I live in NY, I tend to avoid the city and am much happier out here on Long Island. :sunny: The trees on Glendora Blvd. are beautiful!
I love the FoxDrugs photo! I'm a big "retro" fan... someday I'll do a photoblog on my kitchen (which has been renovated into a 50's style diner - or as close to one as you can get in a rental unit)
Neat photos. You can find anything you are looking for if you just look hard enough.
You captured the "small town" effect very well. I like your photo entries. You have a good eye for capturing interesting patterns.
I've always loved your pictures...thanks for sharing. peace out and take care. autumn
Thanks for bringing back my childhood memories. You have defnately made me homesick. I grew up in the small city next to Glendora....Azusa that is. Glendora Blvd is exactly the way I remembered it.
Oh yeah, Hi!
RYC: my name is CHRISTINE:)not Cynthia:nono: and my post are unblocked now if it helps-sorry:p as for the topic of equality, I am a little concerned I will hit some 'hot' buttons with that one, but it's only 'phase one'
Michael - always love your photos
Hi Mike,
Enjoyed all the pictures and reading about LA. I have been there once. To me it felt huge and overpowering, but I only saw one area..
I hope you are doing well, peace andlove:)
My comments.
Hey, Mike. Thanks for dropping by. Goodness; you are multi-talented. I have cruised around the net looking at your poetry, art, photographs. I especially liked 'still life with a bong' and 'earth mother'. I LOVE L.A. I work for the city and spend my days roaming around her. L.A. is a fantastic 'small town' that spans 440 square miles.
Regarding your top leaking, I once had a '55 T-Bird in San Francisco. The thing stayed so we inside, I had grass growing in the carpet. No joke.

Michael, This makes me smile. I really fell in love with SoCal in the short time I was down there. Thanks for sharing these gems!

That is a great photo post. I am not very good at posting photos. I am a simple man with simple skills.
RYC: I am glad you stopped by again. I have seen your comments on other blogs, mainly on Denise's site. I hope to continue to see you around. The funny thing is I don't comment on most of the featured sites either. I have contact with many of them through email and IM but most of that happened with time.
I never would have thought of LA as such a historically preserved place. I loved the pics and your walk through the "smalltown" of LA...
I love the pictures! The only time I have ever been in California was during a layover at the LA Airport on my way to Hawaii. I did get to see CarrotTop (the comedian) though. My daughter was quite impressed. It is interesting to see the small town pictures, because we tend to think of California as all big towns like LA, San Francisco, and Sacramento.
I love this photopost. Particularly the one of the County Fair scene.
I love to go and find some small towns. We have a million of them here. Lol...
Hi Mike!
The pictures are wonderful, and each one has its own story to tell. Yet viewed together, they also combine to tell a story... a wonderful story at that. To think, earlier this year I was offered a job in Torrance, and I had almost forgotten how attractive the area was. Of course, SoCal is one thing, but SoFL is paradise! Hehe.
BE blessed!
Steve
