    INTERNET ISLAND TOPIC POST 1.01:

    “Internet Island Tutorial ”

Welcome Fellow Islanders. This will probably be of interest to a lot of you. I want to give you some information about the Internet Island. We have 86 members already and the island only started accepting visitors last Friday. Each “Topic Post” is of vital importance to Islanders, so please SUBSCRIBE to WhenWordsCollide.

First our vocabulary list and some brief notes. I will refer to these terms often. It’s nice if you know what I mean when I use them. The primary goal of the existence of the island is that we all are able to COMMUNICATE,

Mouse: What you use to maneuver around the internet, and COPY/PASTE information in a computer environment.

“Webpage”: Whatever is showing on your monitor screen when you are on the internet. Each is identified by it’s own “URL”:
“URL”: The address of a webpage on the internet. It is listed in the address box at the top of your browser window and begins with “http” or “www”. URL is an acronym for “Universal Resource Locater”.

“The Island”: The Internet Island blogring.
“Islanders”: Members of the Internet Island Blogring.
“Internet Island Blogring”: A list on Xanga of the Islander’s blogs, with profile pictures and brief introductions, which can be presented in a number of ways, the best of which being “recently updated.” if you wish to see who has just posted. “Username” if you want an alphabetical list of the members, and “By Join Date” which lists islander ranked by the time they first stepped foot upon the island, with the newest members first, and the oldest members last. You can use this instead of your sub list if you want to find fellow Islander sites in one place.
“WhenWordsCollide”: The blog of Michael F. Nyiri, poet, philosopher, fool. I am the “Webmaster” of AllThingsMike, my personal website,  and “Ringleader” of the Internet Island Blogring. Right on this blog is where “Topic Posts” will be presented. Please Subscribe to WhenWordsCollide.
“Topic Post”: A blog entry on the WhenWordsCollide blog which presents a “topic” or discussion for Internet Islanders. These will be mixed in with regular WhenWordsCollide Blog entries and will feature the “Internet Island” logo or “header” at the top of this post. For those that use a subscription browser, the words Internet Island will always be first.
“Topic Entry”: Your response to a Topic Post on your own blog. You create it in your own style, and post it among the entries of your blog.

At the top of any webpage on WhenWordsCollide, there is a link to the current Topic Post. This is the main gathering place for Islanders during the time of the Topic, which is usually two weeks. Islanders can find the links to the other member’s Topic Entries in the comments secion of the Topic Post webpage. Past Topic Posts will be listed in the AllThingsMike Universe column at the left of this webpage under the Jukebox This Week feature. (Soon the Logo will be over there if it isn’t already. These sites take time to build.

How to alert other Islanders that you have a “Topic Entry” available for viewing, and letting fellow Islanders know where to get to it: Leave a comment on the Topic Post on WhenWordsCollide.

Before I go any farther, here’s the main FAQ (frequently asked question) so far.
“How do I create a link?”
I might even attempt to take it perhaps further. I will not “assume” anything when giving instructions.
    “What is a Link?”

A link is a way for an Islander (or anyone else on the internet) to get from one part of the Island to another. When you “click” on a link with your “mouse” you can go to the “address” or “website” or “blogpage” that the link directs you to. Links can be images or text. If text, usually they are of a different color, like this, and might be underlined. It’s easy to create your own links, and this is how to do it.

How to Create a Link to your “Topic Entry” in the “Topic Post”.
This is how to link to your discussion of the current topic on your own blog to let people visit an d comment.

    1. Open two Browser Windows. (A Browser Window is a resizable “window” containing a webpage.)
The first should be open to your Topic Entry. This will be the entry when you hit the “comments” link on your own blog.
    2. The second should be the comments screen for the Topic Post on WhenWordsCollide.
    3. Write “This is MY POST.” in the comments box on the Topic Post. (Or “My POST is ready”, or something like that.)
    4. Click on the other browser window with your mouse. Also with your mouse, Highlight the URL or address of your Topic Entry. (Make sure you have first hit the “comments” link on your own entry before highlighting the URL. DON’T Highlight the URL of the page that has all five entries on your blog. The page should show only the Topic Entry and comments (or the comments box if there aren’t any comments yet.
    5. Right click your mouse and select “COPY”
    6. Go to the Topic Post screen again on the other browser window.Highlight the word “POST”.
    a. You can also just “PASTE” the link if you wish.
    b. But if your word POST is a link, it looks neater.

    7. Click the word “Add Link”
    8. A small rectangle shaped tan colored window called a “script prompt” will appear on your screen. In the text area inside this window, PASTE the URL of your Topic Entry. (Right click and select PASTE) If there are two “http”‘s, delete one of them or the link will not work.
    9. Click “OK”
    10. The word “POST” will now be a different color, and you can hit. “Submit” on the comment screen, and you have just created a text link.

Hope this tutorial helps. I was going to personally email or comment on those entries that either didn’t have links, the blogger didn’t know how to insert a link, or the link didn’t work. I know my way around the island, so I was able to find all of your pages, and so far, there are 31 Topic Entries.

It has taken me a while to create this Topic Post, which will hopefully be of help to those who need it.  This Topic will be “active” for two weeks, in order to give all 86 Islanders the chance to participate without feeling “rushed”. I’ve got the Tivo paused for the beginning of “Lost” which which is a new episode tonight, and I’m itching to go see what’s gonna happen this week.(Somebody’s going to die, and I hope it isn’t Hugo Reyes (Hurley), my favorite character, or else I might stop watching the show. I hope it’s that bitch Ana Lucia.) Anyway, I’ve got to leave this island to sail to that island for a while. Again, I am overwhelmed at the response to the blogring, and I do apologize for not being able to personally meet everyone yet, but I like to “take my time” and visit respectfully, and soak in your blogs like I wish more people would soak in mine. I promise to create my blog entry either after “Lost” or tomorrow morning. I’m always late at posting blogring “Topic Entries’ so I shouldn’t change my habits on my own ring.  Oh, and here’s what the “script prompt” window looks like with a sample “URL” in it. And here is what I want every Blog Entry Comment in the Blog Topic Post to look like in two weeks. I’m using the Photo Challenge blogring as an example. They have a separate blog where they check Topic Posts.

I will bid you adieu. Your Island Leader, Michael F. Nyiri, poet, philosopher, fool

If haven’t participated yet because I swear when I read this, it seems more complicated than it probably is…I’ll figure it out.

  • I agree and said the same thing tonight: Ana needs killin’…I’ll probably change my mind as we get their stories starting next week. I was never a Shannon fan, but I did feel sorry for her tonight, maybe because she had a wicked stepmother? Can you tell I’m a LOST addict?

  • Dear Mike,

Man, you are thorough here.  You have the patience of a god to write all this up with illustrations.  Hopefully this will improve our communication on the “island”.

As for the “island” of “Lost”, I have no clue what you’re talking about … but hope you enjoy it!

    Love & Friendship,
    Liz

  • Excellent instructions! I may be the “island of the lost!”

I hope you have a good night!

  • Hi Mike!

You’re a whiz, for sure. My “Triple I and an E” is done (Internet Island Intro Entry). I shall sleep now.

  • ps. And I can certainly see why you feel a bit washed out! What a successful endeavor this is turning out to be. Congratulations!

  • Wow, you are fantastically organized.  I love it..

I would like to link this page to the Featured Grownups site, you have some good info on here for creating urls, and it would also be a good advertisement for your blogring.  I won’t link it unless you say it’s alright, so please get back to me and let me know.

Have a great day Mr. Mike!

  • RYC Thanks, my dear Mike, for coming over and reminding me. I love the idea of Internet Island. Also thanks for telling me about Queen of Swords poem and yours. I miss Terry…oh, do I ever. This is why I left the other site up. I was hurt by someone who lurked and then said some things that nearly broke my heart so I had to decide whether to go underground completely, which would have meant that I would lose a lot of people, or create another site and build it so my friends could find me. I will continue both sites, but this one is me. No, the cat is not mine…only the one on her belly looking wasted! That is Shug and when she is being nasty…Sugar. like when she upset the pitcher of water!

  • 89 now, and smoking like a wildfire! Thank you for creating this blogring–great way to ‘stretch the brain,’ and get to know others! Thank you for your tutorial-will have to study it-appears a little complicated, but once understood–will go easily.

  • Wherever Is Land is, I’m glad you found it.  I hear it’s off Verdugo Blvd somewhere.  Enjoyed your technical manual, but none of it works for me–my 286 keeps running out of memory.  (I’m an avid follower of your profile pics now.  I get up during the night to see if they’ve changed.  Happy to see you’re not all angry now–at least the one eye–but why are you pulling on your beard?)

  • Thank you, Mike, for taking the time to help the others out with linking to their posts. It seems to have been causing some confusion, so it’s really good of you. I tried to do something similar in my Weekend Topic post, but it’s not as detailed as yours. I think, I’ll provide a link to this post for anyone still having problems.

    Thanks for all you do,

    Simone

  • OMG, you have scared me. Can’t I just write a post, make a comment, and leave the link in my comment??? This might be an interesting post for tomorrow, not that who I am is that exciting, or anything.
