  • "Helping the Fallen Angel"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    1972

    I don't know
    Where the angel is
    Where the angel has gone
    You and I both
    Running through the world
    Lifting a piece of cardboard

    Angel?

    Are you the fallen angel
    Climbing toward the ladder
    Huh?

    Who gave you to me
    I wonder was it God
    ...and can I help you

    Back you go
    ...never more a fallen angel
And through it now I know
Who I am and where the angel is

"Last Time I'll Ever Think About Her, I'll Bet"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    1972

Someone says he has to leave her now
The sh*t on bathroom walls are
About as bad as that in the toilet
An auto cruising could so easily
    Lose control
God is there in her little 10c bible
    But what use is there
    Now
Hope flew away so easily this afternoon
    Tears
    & more tears
But they ain't really coming from her eyes
Someone wrote a letter but the
      stamp was rightsideup
For once and last time: she cried too
    And sent it back
Dirt on the ground with crawling vermin
    TV's on the blink
God took his bible back to the store
Her pen puts him in her hand
And she writes another one of
      those damn poems
    Cause no one's there even
This time to tell her how true
      it is

    "and the PARTY begins"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    1972

    Sit in the corner
    Avoiding eyes
    Then you see her
She is sitting alone in the corner too.
    Records playing
    Strobes burning
    Everybody'sdrinkingandhaving"fun"
She and you could be together

    "Hello," you know you're drunk
But boy you say to yourself
      Isn't she cute
"Hi" she returns and you know what that
means so you throw her a kiss
    and she returns that'
and the PARTY begins for you

    Lying there in her lap
    and everybodyelse in theplace
is lying there in her lap
And you tell her you love her
    And everybodyandhisbrother tells her
    They love her too

And she says "I love everybody."
The door closes and some guy says
    "Goodbye"
You get in your V-dub and drive away
And you didn't even get her address.

"Last Time I'll Ever Think About Her, I'll Bet...Part Two"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    Jan. 24, 1973

    I
Hungry eyes, yes that's how I'll describe them
Hungry eyes searching, that's the word,
    Searching for attention.
Attention in the form of friendship
    Hungry eyes searching for attention
    In the form of friendship.
    Hungry eyes.

    II
God was there in her little 10c Bible,
But when the bookstore closed He went home too.
God can't help her when she needs Him.
    But wait
I'll bet God made her a match-
God was always such a good matchmaker
Just look at the great lovers of history
And Donna will make such a fine one.

    III
Donna, oh Donna, l'll always remember
Those hungry, hungry eyes of yours
Grasping so firmly to your lovemate
And I think all you wanted was friendship.
    Yes, dear. Friendship costs highly
And I'd say you paid a fair price
    You thought he'd be faithful,
    At least.

    IV
He'd always been the class martyr-
    He was so religious
Giving you dreams like it was
    Nothing.
He left you stranded with empty dreams
    What could fill those dreams.

    V
Was it my fault, Donna, that I
came by your side in your hour of
need. I mean, after all, I wanted
to be your friend. Good friends
are scarce. I never cared for
you in the way you thought he
    did.
Was it wrong of me? I got sick
of your weekly love letters. I
got tired of your hungry eyes.
I'm human, Donna, and now I
cry to you - even though you'll never
hear me. I told you awful things
to get you off my back. I didn't
    want a parasite - but you're human,
    and I never realized it.

    VI
    You're sensitive
    And you probably forgave me
    But I'm sorry
I don't want to think about you
    I don't want you
    I've got my own problems.
    But I always understood you
And I backed away when you needed me
    I realize it now
    But it's far too late.

    "Reasons"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    June 23, 1973 10:00 p.m.

    Affections
Reflecting pasts with mirrors toward the future
    Humming forgotten tunes
Meet a nice girl gut don't know what to say
    Hi!
Will I ever see you again?

Times erase a lover's last squint
Into the ever closing door of darkness
    "Goodbye remember to write huh?"
And they didn't even copy down the address

Passing old men on the streetcorners
While they gaze into repressed expressions
One wonders why the world exists.

My dog barks at a passing car
    A door is closing somewhere
Empty glasses are all that remain
    of last night's party

Tell me all you can in a minute
Give me your life to cherish.
It isn't just that I feel an
    Affection
    A direction
We continually betray our love for need
I saw you and wondered what it
would be like if we could be
    together.

    Can we -
    Will we ever -
Is life separated by 45 miles
Is space a door closed on liking someone.

    Heartbeats will synchonize
With people across the world we
    Don't even know

Millions of individuals are out there
And each is a world of laughter
     And tears and dreams....
    and
If I met you on the street I
    would wonder what you're like

Give me the chance to find out.

    "Questions: Parties"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    Aug. 5, 1973 10:30 p.m.

I hear melodious strains of music
While watching dances to break the box.
A young girl touches her lover's cheek
And maestros drink to their health.
A rock and roll oldie fills the
    smoke-consumed cubicle
We smell a melange of odors
    Music mellows throngs one moment
Then rips everyone our of their senses again.

While dreams crumple up like yesterday's newspaper
A type of music fills the room
    Any type of music
Music and people spell a party

    Glass-filled imagery sitting on nonexistant
ledges walking through a maze of legs
Notice all the girls who sit with four-
    mixed-drinks talking to the walls

I sense with all my soul a person over there
She talks with me a while then I remember
that tomorrow it will all be over and
I may not see her again...
When you're under, everyone is so happy
And everyone is so eager to be friendly
But how will she interpret my advances
Do I realize that behind that pretty
face is a living human being

Forty seven people are having a good time
And while we try like hell
We know we're only giving a good show
    Because I know I'm wond'ring what
Each look she gives is hiding
    What are her secrets?
    Will I ever know?

Every party attended holds a couple dozen
    You don't know -
And if she's among them you contemplate
Whether or not you can really get close.

Will she be like last time?
    Will I evern know?

    What will she be thinking
Does she know I'd just like to be with her
    I'll bet she thinks
"He's just giving me a line"
Is what we say the truth
Do we believe in truth at all like that
which people learn in Sunday School at seven

If my Vdub is gassed up I cold take her
away from all these faces in this cubicle
And away alone I could know her -
But does she want to be known
Or is she a face at a party
    And will I ever know?

    "Before the Heartaches"
    Poetry by Michael F. Nyiri
    Aug. 9, 1973 1:00 a.m.

When she smiles a warmth engulfs
The valleys - people smile to know she's there
When she laughs young lovers know it
And I feel that time is dancing through despair

I can laugh, but then who hears me
If she laughs and she is near me
I can face the broken dreams without a care

When the world wakes up each morning -
I can hear her calling nature to her side
When she smiles upon her lovers they all know
She can be only nature's bride

If I laugh, I try to show it
When she laughs, everyone knows it
She was light while never ever having tried

    If she were mellow
    I'd like to say
You are the best thing that has
    happened today

    If she were with me
    I'd say hello
    Wherever you will take me
    I'll go

And all the time I try to convey
All the nice things I really want to say
I find I stumble like a schoolboy with a crush
If she'd accept me, I'd probably blush.

    I know I love the moment's creature
    And I wish I were a teacher
But we find someone we'd worship
    for life.

If only I didn't care for tradition
If only she liked me only for what I am
    My poems would be light
Like this one tries to be
    If only I didn't give a damn.

I just took the photo for the header tonight, right as the sun set, right before the rains started coming down. Hopefully they will last, and hopefully they will put out the fires up in the hills. MFN

  • I like the photo. I was just at someone else's site and they had posted a beautiful picture of a sunset over the ocean. Very nice. I like the way you write, Michael. I really like that you show us some of your older work so we can see how your style has evolved over the last 30 years. Thanks!

  • I was listening to Daft Punk's "Da Funk" and your movements in your profile .gif matched the tune exactly, thus obliterating any real comment.

  • I just read the first poem this evening.

    Running through the world
    lifting a piece of cardboard
    Angel?

Thats powerful imagery...for me it provokes big city memories.....

  • Your work evokes some of my own memories of those days. And I love the picture at the top, it's a perfect accompaniment.

Thanks for letting us look back...
    Sandy

  • :goodjob: Your profile pic is making me dizzy!:lookaround: After your eye surgery should you be rocking your head back and forth like that ?:nono::eek:LOL!!!   Always enjoy my visits here reading thinking and remembering. :spinning:

  • I had time to read the first three or four.  Of these, I liked No. 2 the best, for its striking word choices.

Your comments never fail to warm me, Michael.  However much or however little you say (or have time to say), I love every word.  Thanks for letting me be one of your Xanga friends.

  • wow, my dear Mr Mike - a poetic feast?

"Fallen Angel" evokes such a sense of mystery...
the 2 "Last time I'll Ever Think About Her" poems... well, they're my favorite in this series... touching , and yet I can see why its a good thing to stop thinking about her..memories can sometimes touch us more than any of our own emotions..... Hope those hungry eyes get satiated...
"And The Party Begins" .. oh dear .. what a sense of emptiness at the end of it

"Reasons" is sincere and touching.... so did the chance to find out come?
Why does "Question, Parties" seem to hold a similiar theme with "And the Party Begins"? I am thinking it could be the same person? If not, well, thats an unfortunate thing to have it happen twice!

"Before the Heartaches" ... ahhh... I do adore the forlorn tune... and sense the regret piling it...  If only...

and the header pic is lovely...
Hope you have a great weekend my dear...

  • these are always fantastic mike

  • You put so much in one post. My first comment, for now: "Lying there in her lap
    and everybodyelse in theplace
is lying there in her lap
And you tell her you love her
    And everybodyandhisbrother tells her
They love her too" - I enjoy this stanza, maybe because it's reminiscent of the Beatles for me. Always a pleasure.

  • Nice selection today Michael!  I really appreciated fallen angel!

Thanks for your help with the tracker -- great recommendation it worked immediately ...and I'd tried 3 others that I could not get to work at all:laugh:

  • RYC: You're right, if you had tried to run that sunset down, it would have been gone before you got there. I go through the same thing on a regular basis. Sometimes I jump in the car and try to get to the shoreline, but what I was looking to find there has already passed me by. Love the colors you caught in your pictures, wow! I just went ahead and let the slide show play a few times.
    Sandy

  • Read the first few--interesting how writing changes, over the years. Nice sunset pic. Could you please tell me more about the tracker Cat got from you?

  • Thanks for the comment.

I like to be much more open-ended about defining "poetry"

A painting or a good instrumental can be poetic, so I don't really feel obligated to organize my thoughts into single lines most of the time.

And Rita was a total letdown.

  • You never fail to disappoint. Thank you for the marvelous words.
    ~V

  • RYC: Those little scews happen to be photograhs, however I spend a huge part of my day using Pro-E and photo-rendering 3D models that look very convincing.  I'll consider the umberalls.  good idea

  • hello.  Great job on the poems, especially the last one.  The pictures are terriffic as always.  Keep it up :-
    D.  Peace Out and Take Care.
