  • Hey, kids, I can’t help it. I know the photopost from earlier hasn’t left the first page of the blog, which sometimes causes older browsers to crash because there’s too many pictures, but you know, usually I can just shovel the words into cyberspace with ease, but you are watching what happens when a really prolific blog (moi’s) hits real life in the posterior, and has to take a breather. You will notice first the almost daily entries trickled to one every two days. Now the “serials” of which there are four or five going on right now, have almost disappeared. And I’m posting two photo entries on the same page. No, it’s not that I’m out of ideas, or don’t want to blog. Conversely, I want to show what I’m interested in right now THIS INSTANT, and it’s since I was going through my Webshots Gallery, where all these photos are stored. (Thousands, I’m not kidding) I noticed that I have a great many photos that approach art (if I may be so delusional to say so) and I haven’t yet featured them on the blog. So while I “surf” and “ooohh” and “ahhh” at my prodigious talents, I thought I’d make a “potpourii” photopost with these photos. Upcoming, however, will be new chapters of the “Sexual History”, which hasn’t been featured here for a while, “Pat and Mike” a story about my ex girlfriend, which I just started writing on September 13th, and “My Childhood in Los Angeles” which was begun in mid August. (And for those of you who haven’t read the first entries, those are links to the last entry in the series, with links to earlier entries.

Well, without further ado, here are some “random” images from the Webshots Gallery with astute commentary from yours truly.

January 2005: Signal Hill, CA.: The “theme” here will be my “cloudscapes”. 2005 has been a banner year for cloudscapes here in SoCal. We usually have “clear skies” but there was a lot of moisture here earlier in the year. In fact, one of the later photos in this series was taken after a thunderstorm just a week or so ago, in late summer. So, it’s just been a great year for cloudscapes. This one was taken at the top of “Signal Hill Park” at the top of Signal Hill, in Signal Hill, CA, which is right next to Long Beach, where I work. I kind of like the symmetry of this photo, which of course is shot with a wide angle lens.

May, 2005: Getty Museum, L.A. This is one of my favorite “photos of art” that I took when I visited the Getty in May of this year.  It is a “Portrait of Vicomtesse de Vaudreuil” by Eliz. Louise Vigee-le Brun and painted in 1785. I like both the angle and the detail, which of course, can be seen better by clicking on the image to bring up the full size photo in another window.

August 2005: Lomita, CA: I awoke one Sunday morning last month to this cloudscape. This is taken on the road up into Palos Verdes and is shot into the sun, which was rising at the time, at about 7 or so in the morning. This is all natural, and there is not computer imaging done on this photo, which is a wide angle view of the horizon.

1972: Glendora, CA: I thought I’d put this photo of an early “art project” into this series. In 1970, I “constructed” this figure, “Croaker” from stuffed newspapers and one of those clay Mexican skulls. He wears gloves, and is drinking a Budweiser and wearing a cowboy hat. He is full size, about six feet. I took this “guy” with me through many apartments in the 70s, and finally “killed” him on an acid trip back in 78. Here he is in a photo from 1972 in the “living area” of my “suite of rooms” in the second “family home” in Glendora. I took the photo of the photo with my digital camera. I didn’t use a scanner, cause mine is broken.

April 2005: Perris, CA And here’s some more clouds. Here shot through a chainlink fence, another one of my “trademark shots”. This was taken in April during a respite from all the rain we had back then, in Perris, CA at the Orange Empire Railway Museum.

April 2005: Perris, CA Speaking of Perris, here is the actual Perris Railway station, which used to be a museum but is now abandoned, but owned by the Orange Empire Railway Museum, and eventually they are going to refurbish it and run a train between downtown Perris and the museum.

November, 2004: Lomita, CA I’ve shown this composited photo on the blog before, but not since last November, when I took the photo. Actually, this is two photos, taken at different exposures to highlight first the sunset, and next my car, and then pasted together in the picture publisher program.

June, 2004: San Pedro, CA. I am shooting out of the mouth of a cave, obviously, and I’m pretty far back into the cave, where it is rather dark, shooting out with a zoom lens. The day was quite muggy, and the sky isn’t blue at all. I would go back on a better day for photography, but I had to actually climb around the rocks for quite a while in order to get to the cave, which is not readily accessible to the general public. Still, makes for an interesting shot, don’t you think?

September, 2005: Lomita, CA. This is one of my most recent cloudscapes. I took my camera in to work last week after we had quite a bit of thunderstorms overnight. It was raining and gloomy all day long, but after work, when I went to the bank, I looked up when the rain cleared and the sun came out, and got this glorious shot of the sun. This is one of those photos where you half expect God to walk right out of the clouds. This is in the parking lot of the outdoor shopping center where I went to get money out of my bank that day.

October, 2003: Betty Boop as Vampirella: In honor of Hallowe’en next month, I am last presenting this composite artwork from the Betty Boop Pages website of Betty Boop as Frank Frazetta’s “Vampirella”. This was composited in 2003 for Hallowe’en on the The Betty Boop Pages, and the only thing that is actually “original” art are the “cooties” which I “drew” freehand in the windows draw program.

  • As always, your photos are a real treat. . .although I’ll admit to being a bit conflicted about the Betty Boop-Vampirella pic.

It was great to hear from you and read your comments.  You’re right, I haven’t been commenting as much lately myself–I sort of addressed that with today’s entry.  As you surmised, it’s been busy here.  But I’ll be popping by as often as I can.  Take care, and I’ll be checking back soon.  Don’t be a stranger at my site either!

  • i like the portrait of the viscomtess (sp) i like portraits of olden days. not the black and white photographs (those are kind of creepy to me cause no one smiles) but the oil and water paintings.

  • Your profile pic .gif makes me vaguely dizzy. But otherwise, rocking.

  • I hope you scan your photo archives more often, Mike. These were very enjoyable, as were your descriptions. Love the photo of the Eliz portrait…it is her eyes that make it complete for me. Your cloudscapes are a joy…you know how much I love clouds.

I’m slowly catching up after my long period of malaise, and hope to get to the posts that I missed.

  • i loved your cloud shots. i find myself fascinated by the clouds here, and have become a real sky watcher. it’s always amazing. when i was in tennasee, the sky was overcast and gray the whole time. i kept looking at it, waiting for it to change.

  • Mike,
I am sorry that I couldnt came back to your blog so often. I have been caught up with so much of work!

hey I really liked that picture of Perris Railway station. It reminds me a night I spend alone in a small railway station . That was fun.

    Nice entry!

  • Love the pics – but Betty just doesn’t look right as a vamp.  Oh well

  • I always enjoy your photo posts! Signal Hill is an awesome pic.

  • A great selection of photos, Mike.  As usual, you bring back pleasant (usually) memories.  I’m glad you are not on fire.  You are still moving, however.  Perhaps there is something going on outside of the picture that is stabbing you bad.  I tried not to look and just hurried on to Glendora and Signal Hill.

  • great photos…the cloud through the fence was esp. interesting. that’s a great effect.

  • While there’s quite a few of us that’s prolific…methinks word-for-word YOU outdo everyone:wave:

  • Great photos.  I especially love the cloud and cave photos.  The picture and story behind “Croaker” made me laugh.  :goodjob:!
