Couch Potato Weekend
We got off work early on Friday the 1st and I headed to Hollywood Video. I haven't bought any DVDs in a while, and they had one of their 3 for $25.00 "previously viewed" video sales. Even though I have promised myself not to make any needless purchases until I have paid down some of my credit card debt, I had at least two movie titles I wanted to get used. I hadn't yet completed my "Harry Potter" collection, and was itching for some more current titles. I spent about an hour and a half in the store, and collected 6 new titles (listed at the end of this post) and rented three. Besides the three titles I already had delivered from Netflix, and the movies I wanted to see in a theater, I decided to do "nothing" except be a coutch potato all weekend, and stay home (or go out) and see movies. I did catch some fireworks from my backyard, but there was a cloud cover, so didn't see as much of a show as last year. I am glad the neighborhood kids don't have anymore fireworks to shoot off until at least New Year's.
War of the Worlds 2005 I hate to admit that this was a "must see" film for me. I cringed when I heard Steven Spielberg was "remaking" one of my favorite films of all time. But knowing that Spielberg loves the original, I felt he would turn in at least an exciting retelling of the plot. I was a bit disappointed in his "story". The original movie, based on the H.G. Wells novel from the 19th century, has Gene Barry as a scientist enlisted to help in the "war". Spielberg dispenses with any attempt at "scientific explanation" and goes for the pure adreniline rush of a "let's run away" type actioner, where Tom Cruise, and son Justin Chatwin and daughter Dakota Fanning spend their time fleeing the alien menace. They aren't called "martians" at all in this movie. The special effects are first rate, as expected, but there isn't any real "movie" on which to hang them, and respected actors like Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, not to mention Cruise, are totally wasted. It's an adreniline rush, but nothing more, nor less. There is one scene in the 1953 version where Gene Barry's scientist is pulled out of his pickup filled with scientific paraphanelia by a crowd of crazed citizens. Even though the set is "backlot" and the scene looks as if it's in a movie, it is much more exciting and scary than a similar scene in the new film. I'm giving the new "War of the Worlds" a 6 of 10 on the Mikometer. I think it could have been a much better remake.
Land of the Dead 2005 George Romero "invented" the modern day "zombie" movie with "Night of the Living Dead" in 1968, a film that still has the power to shock an audience. His "Dead Trilogy" is a film studies course in zombie films. He turns it into a "quadrilogy" with "Land", which I liked immensely, even though it is not scary at all. A group of mercenaries goes out to outlying towns to scour for supplies, killing the dead as they go, and sometimes members of the squad are bitten, which of course means they too will turn into zombies. Rollicking good fun, directed by the master. George's "Dawn of the Dead" in 1978 is still the benchmark zombie film of all time, but George updates his story, and shows all the "modern" zombie directors that he's still king of the zombie hill with "Land". Neat to see Dennis Hopper as the villianous corporate type who runs the tower where the privileged humans stay now that zombies are running over most of the countryside. A 7 of 10 on the Mikometer.
Bewitched 2005 Why did I see this film? Two reasons, well, three if you count the fact that I "sneaked" into the movie because I like to see more than one film for my eight bucks. They make me sit throught more ads at the movies than I do at home thanks to Tivo, so I try to get as many films into an afternoon as I can. I shudder to think of what I'd say if someone "caught" me, but they could have thrown me out of "Bewitched" and I wouldn't have minded. The two reasons are Nora Eprhon, who wrote and directed, and Nicole Kidman, who I see in everything she does, but after showing up in quality fare like "The Interpreter" she makes weird choices like "Bewitched". The less said about this "remimagining;" of a remake of the old television show, which probably isn't too popular these days, being a b&w series from over 30 years ago, the better. Nora is slumming. Nicole is wasted, (although I like her character here better than in "The Stepford Wives" remake or reimagining.) Will Ferrell can be likable, but not in this film. A 4 or 10.
DeGrassi Junior High 1986-1991 One reason I love the Netfilx service is that I always have a bunch of televsion series queued up and this is one of my favorites from the 80s. In the states, we had "afterschool specials" in the 70s and "Saved by the Bell" in the 80s, but my favorite "teen school" series from the late 80s is the Canadian "DeGrassi Jr. High" and "Degrassi High", which followed the same set of characters through high school. I taped the series on VHS when it originally aired on PBS in the 80s, but I've been catching up with Wheels, Joey, Caitlin, Stephanie, Yik, Arthur, Spike, Snake, and the rest on DVD. I highly recommend this series as some of the best children's programming ever presented. The series deals with abortion, homosexuality, drugs, coming of age, sex, insecurity, and shies away from nothing in it's plethora of stories about preteens and teenagers dealing with life. Each half hour episode is shot and acted like a miniature movie. I am getting to know the "kids of DeGrassi" all over again. 8 of 10 on the Mikometer.
Cursed 2005 Wes Craven ("The Hills Have Eyes" "Nightmare on Elm Street") is getting pretty prolific in his old age, and this cheaply shot programmer about teen angst and werewolves starring Christina Ricci is passable entertainment. (You'd think it was Hallowe'en instead of 4th of July with all the horror films I watched.) Wes has always made good horror fare, and this one is no less enjoyable, with some solid scares, and some great tongue in cheek acting from the principals. I don' t remember it even being in theaters, and I rented the "unrated" version. 7 of 10
Hitch 2005 This is Will Smith's first "romantic comedy" and it has a light touch and is genuinely funny. This is one of those "committee films" like, say, "Bewitched", but this film seems like a standard "committee film" on the surface, but is actually more "real" and heartwarming than usual. Andy Tennant directed. He hasn't much under his belt, "Fools Rush In", and "Sweet Home Alabama" were directed by him, and there's nothing really standout about this film, but it is enjoyable, and while instantly forgettable, is a delightful showcase for Will's comedic talents. A 6 of 10 on the Mikometer.
Shaun of the Dead 2004 This English zombie movie about a group of slackers "led" by Shaun (Simon Pegg) and directed by Edgar Wright, an English television director, is an homage to G.Romero, and also the funniest zombie movie ever made. Suffice it to say that the slacker life is almost indeterminitely zombie like to begin with, and the comparisons made are underplayed but hilarious to watch. I'd skipped renting this film on numerous occasions, but I really liked it. I might even say it was better than Romero's own "Land of the Dead." A biting premise pulled off rather well. 8 of 10
Bambi 1942 I'd never seen this Disney masterpiece, and it finally came ot the top of my queue on Netflix. My favorite Disney "cartoon feature" has always been "Pinnochio", and Bambi was made the year after. The animation is at the top end of top notch. This movie was six years in the making, and there are excellent making of features on the disc. No matter what excitement computer animation has in store for us, as far as I'm concerned, watching excellent hand drawn animation from the Disney studios in the 40s is the best there is. Nobody did it better. The story is simple and wonderfully told. Bambi "the prince of the forest" is born, participates in a series of adventures, falls in love, and eventually sires his own twin fawns. The animal kingdom lives in harmony, and is always on the lookout for their shared enemy, "man". A fairly prescient and involving film from start to finish. The songs aren't as well known as in other Disney films, but the musical numbers are fantastic as well as the action and interaction of the memorable characters. A 9 of 10.
Team America: World Police 2004 This "Jerry Bruckheimer film" with puppets, directed by Trey Wilson and Matt Stone of South Park fame, didn't do too well at the box office. It is absolutely the best puppet satire I've ever seen. Some of the language is a bit over the top. (The theme song is really biting) And it certainly was made to offend a lot of people, most notably "actors" which Trey and Matt seem to hate with a passion. I rented the "unrated" version which has the "complete" puppet sex scene that was a bone of contention among the ratings board when it was released. The scale of the sets and the way the movie is filmed is just delicious. It's exactly like a Bruckheimer of Michael Bay film only with puppets. I didn't really have a high want to see quotient for this film, but I must say that it surprised me, but it really shouldn't have. I think Matt and Trey have an excellent sense of humor, even if it is a bit gross at times, and they have outdone themselves with "Team America". An 8 of 10 on the Mikometer.
Below are the titles I also purchased on Friday. All in all, I had an enjoyable weekend as a "couch potato" in my own easy chair, and at the multiplex. Before retiring last night, I fired up "Sideways" again.
Perfect Blue 1997, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban 2004, Hotel Rwanda 2004, Sideways 2004, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events 2004, The Aviator 2004

:sunny::sunny::sunny:Interesting range of reviews! Bambi was one of my favorites! I had a vinyl LP with narration by ,what is his name the voice ...He was one of the adult Mickey Mouse Club....oh well ..I loved that record...I played that thing on my record player a zillion times. Haven't been to any movies theaters. Watched some old favorites at home. Nice reviews!

watch perfect blue first!!!! sideways was ok- it's really more of a man's chick flick i decided... but then i got bored and couldn't relate to any of the characters at all. they made no sense to me. the harry potter movies improve as they move away from the books to a script for a visual medium. the rest of your list is an interesting selection of things to watch- not necessarily things on my to see list, but still interesting... we watched a korean movie called "Memories of Murder".... you NEED to see it!!!!!!
Shaun of the Dead and Bambi and Team America I thought were all great. The new WOTW totally disappointed me. Not just the lack of story line, not just that he showed the damn Martians (which is just wrong) and that they were cute, not to mention the fact that the old one is, as you say, much scarier, but also because it falls squarely into the current American "no consequences" theme. There's this huge war, and no one important to the audience is harmed at all and we all live happily ever after in a Norman Rockwell painting.
I wasn't sure whether Spielberg was remaking WOTW or ET...
Dear Mike,
Shaun Of The Dead and Cursed are the only ones I think I'd go see ... and this coming weekend I'll finally go see the new Batman movie (I don't recall what it is called).
But I spent the weekend in bed doing nothing but watching TV as well. And all the movies were a first for me (except for League which I watched three times ... I love that one). So, me weekend lineup was "Dave Chappelle's Season 1", "Napolean Dynamite", "Anchorman", "League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen", and "The Notebook". I must say that "The Notebook" surprised me at how good it was. I usually shy away from so called chick flick type movies because they are at times too sappy ... but this one was so good I saw it three times as well ...
Glad to see that you enjoyed your weekend though, and I hope you have a great week!
Love & Friendship,
Liz
I am absolutely in love with Disney animated movies. My favorite by far is and always will be Robin Hood. I wore out four or five tapes of it when I was very little. I love the Harry Potter movies, too. I've read all the books that are out. I think the new one comes out July 18th or something like that. :giggle:
Hello Michael. First , thanks for your kind comment's . I am not thinking I am apoet , and when I write I dont plan it it just pops out and usually I am careless with puncuation and proofreading. That's not good be you a writer or not . I have a tiny keypad and my nails are long and hit extra keys ( good exceuse )? lol
I am so glad your friend found out in time for treatment , cancer is a horrible disease . I wss privledged to be there with my Mom and help her since she was always there for me . So privledged . A sad part of life , but inevitile . Death is . I often wonder , is it better to know ahead , or to just go suddenly? My Dad went suddenly . It was more of a shcok and there were some thng's I wish I could have said to him , but I know he knew .
Yes, I got everyting confused about what America was based on when she was coloines . I will be lookling forward to reading your essay about that .
I appreciate your comment's, thank you .
I love these movies you purchased . I love 'Shaun of the Dead' . laughed so hard . English Zombies , a little more uptight that American Zombies? Good movie .
Can't go wronmg with Bambi , and you always cry , or I do lol
Some of these other's I'm not thinking I have seen , but the Will Smith movie sounds enjoyable . I love Nicolle Kidman , she has beauty and grace . I was thinking this movies, ' Bewitched ' would have been better .
Have fun watching the other's , nothing wrong with being a couch potatoe here and there !
Peace and Love
I enjoyed Cursed and Shaun of the Dead -- I love horror/scary flicks! I will see the others but prolly on pay per view. Love Bambi ... it's a classic.
It was a great weekend to catch up on some flicks
Dear Mike:
I too have been lagging in my blogsurfing lately... I just haven't had much energy to do much of anything due to the heat. My computer is located in our spare room on the second floor of our house, and thus retains a great deal of the summer heat, so I avoid it on the hottest/muggiest days. Today is an enjoyable one for me with a nice breeze running through the second floor (I have all of the windows opened), as I wait for a nice downpour to start... as much as I love sun and nice days, I can always enjoy a good downpour and thunderstorm. LOL
In response to your comment - a breast pump allows a breastfeeding Mom to express breastmilk to be bottled so the baby can be bottle-fed by the Father or a babysitter, etc. Expressed breastmilk can be frozen and stored that way up to six months!!! Very convenient! Our reason for wanting a breast pump is to allow Brad to feed the baby without losing the nutrients and benefits of breastmilk, so that he gets to bond with the baby as well. Of course we can't bottle feed the breastmilk right away - introducing bottles to a baby too early can cause much confusion for the little guy and result in the end of breastfeeding. In terms of all of the late nights and exhaustion I have to look forward to when our little guy arrives – I look forward to it with open arms… to be a mother, to bring life into this world and to help shape the growth of someone who may someday cure cancer or bring world peace – this is a great gift Brad and I have been given!
In reading your most recent post:
We rented “Hitch” recently as well, and thought that although it was a decent comedic attempt, it certainly didn’t hold our attention as we’d hoped. I am in general not a fan of comedy films, but Brad is, so I thought I’d rent for his tastes… I also rented “Meet the Fockers,” which I preferred over “Hitch.” Last week I rented “Boogeyman” and “Miss Congeniality 2” …. I was content with the former, since I’ve seen very few horror movies that could hold my attention in recent years… so “Boogeyman,” having held my attention the whole way through, was actually quite entertaining…
I was considering taking myself out to a movie tonight – “War of The Worlds,” to be exact… I saw the preview and it seemed like my type of movie (Sci-Fi, Horror, Fantasy are my favorites). There are very few films I will go to the theatre for – but this one seemed worth it… but perhaps not in light of your review? … “Bewitched” I plan to watch when it comes out of DVD… much cheaper, and less worry if it is a waste of my time. :O)
As for “Bambi” – I can’t believe you’ve never seen it until recently. It is one of Disney’s best films I think. We plan to purchase a copy for the little guy! Along with various other older films Brad and I grew up with… newer children’s films just don’t seem to hold the magic they once did…
In flipping through your last few posts: Your recent poem, “The Constant Pallbearer,” struck quite a chord with me… I suspect I too could easily write something similar of those I’ve loved and lost, and it seems unfair to me, at such a young age, to have lost so many. As your poem notes, too pass before the age of 50 seems so young even… Brad and I last night discussed the afterlife, a serious conversation unusual for us, both very fun-loving… and we realized we both have the same fear… the fear that to die is to become nothing. We both worry that perhaps there isn’t a place we all go… be it Summerland, Heaven, some form of afterlife… and perhaps when it ends, it just ends, and we cease to be. It is not death that frightens either of us, but rather, the fear that we really won’t be together again with those we’ve loved and lost. Perhaps this is a rather morbid thing to discuss in a comment, but “The Constant Pallbearer,” brought it to mind again for me.
As to Karla Homolka – I believe most of us Canadians would love to provide her with our own forms of justice, but of course, that would only make us as bad as she… Although I am on the East Coast of Canada, I am still quite uncomfortable with the likes of Ms. Homolka loose in the country I call home…
And now I have some grocery shopping and dishes to do – now that I am officially on maternity leave, I am at a loss for what to do with my time! So far I have gone out to the lake for a day, and traveled to visit my great-grandmother (my soon-to-be-son will be the first great-great grandchild of the family!!) and enjoyed a road trip of back roads and lots of sightseeing… I am restless at best!! :O) As you can see from this novel of a post, I have much time on my hands!
Sincerely,
Dezz
hi Mike! ... you are totally the movie-junkie
which gives you the right to sneak in for an extra flic >> Free of charge!
we havent been to the movies since Ray .. i know, its been a very long time .. 'tis the life of the poor, i'm afraid .. but is cool. we're more music freaks than movie freaks, however - we did want to go catch War of the Worlds .. still do. Except that now, after all the not so good reviews we're thinking of saving those few bucks for another movie or for a couple of drinkies at a bar ^_^ .. and perhaps catch this film at the $3 movie theater or make it a rental.
My mom and my brother went to see Bewitched, and mom loved it, of course .. they said it reminded them of me the whole time ... lol!
but yes, the dissapointment (to me) is that she is not Samantha Stevens but an actress who plays Sam. I remember the minute we heard the movie was gonna be made I was the 1st one to jump up and say That Is A Must See .. until we saw the previews and realized what the movie was about. .... And because Hollywood does real good at bringing diverse actors together for a film, the Kidman/Ferrell is but another wild combo. --in my opinion.
As far as the other films ... i think i'm done with zombie movies. Hitch, with Will Smith .. i dunno, but it sounds like a good movie to catch on tv
.... and the other titles i'm not sure what they are .. ehehe as u can tell i'm not really the movie.nut like yourself ^_^
we're more into independent films.
oh! you know, a few days ago i visited a store and they had so many dream catchers hanging from their ceiling .. they reminded me of you!
.. the philosopher dreamer.
ok guy, have a nice day and a wonderful week .............. Love & Light, Adri
Wow, Mike...you really got going on this, didn't you? I hope to read the entire thing (I really will try, honest). I've missed you and Andreas and the gang. I'm trying to eke out some writing time, though, truly. Miss you in the poetry group. Heck, miss ME in the poetry group.
