PhotoPost: The Goodyear Blimp
Tires are Americana. Tires are Solid Rubber Remembrance. And Good Year tires, along with Firestone, are the rubber tires we remember from our youth. When I was about 7, I can clearly remember my mother pointing out the Good Year blimp to my little sister and I as it majestically crossed the skies above Los Angeles. I had never seen a "blimp" before, except on television, where images from the WWII era cartoons showed "decoy blimps" over England. I can still remember, as if it were yesterday, watching the lazy blimp as it disappeared into the sky over the horizon. It looked like some sort of bomb.
"From the Goodyear website: "The blimp tradition began in 1925 when Goodyear built its first helium-filled public relations airship, the Pilgrim. The tire company painted its name on the side and began barnstorming the United States. Humble beginnings to an illustrious history.
Over the years, Goodyear built more than 300 airships, more than any other company in the world. Akron, Ohio, the company's world headquarters, was the center of blimp manufacturing for several decades.
In the United States it operates three well-recognized blimps: the Spirit of Goodyear, based in Akron, Ohio; the Stars & Stripes, in Pompano Beach, Florida, and the Spirit of America, based in my back yard. Above you see my 1999 Eclipse, parked in my space, in front of the blimp.
Actually, the base of operations for the California Good Year blimp is "almost" in my backyard, in Carson, California, "right down the street" from where I live in the South Bay. As I had my camera with me this beautiful Sunny Southern California day (80 this afternoon, and you will notice my top is down.) I thought I'd snap a few pix of this mighty behemoth. This is the "new" blimp, in commission for at least two months. For a long time the blimp was absent after the old blimp crashed into the nursery behind the "parking field".
These photos are all taken at 3:30 p.m. as the sun was pretty low on the horizon. The shot above was taken from the parking lot, which might have closed at any time while I was using it, as I saw no visible personnel around the blimp or the grounds.
I parked the car, and got out, walking down the length of the street to get some of these shots, all the while looking back to make sure nobody locked my car in the parking lot. I think the shot above is particularly interesting, showing the blimp with a tree and behind a chain link fence.
The shot above was one of about six I made to make sure I got the flag unfurled a bit, and to show the blimp behind the sign in the front of the field. The shot below is a composite of the large sign on Main Street and the blimp. You can probably tell that I didn't match the sky color exactly on the right hand side of where I put the sign.

I like this entry. Some years ago when I was out riding, the GoodYear Blimp was sailing around our city for several days. My sister, a grown-up then and now--well, almost a grown up then and now, was with me and I mentioned the blimp and the sign on it...she said, "I am glad you are with me, if I had seen this alone, I would have thought it was the second coming." She is also the one who swears she saw a UFO and I have never really doubted her, either.

Thanks for your kind words. Sorry I don't leave my posts open for very long after I post them nowadays. Please understand though I do it because I found out that if a post is left on there for very long at Xanga it can be picked up on the main internet search engines. After I found out that my posts before were able to be viewed by the ENTIRE internet, I stopped leaving them on Xanga for very long.
I don't mind my friends whom I know at Xanga or people who randomly stop at my site reading my posts, but I don't want my comments to be broadcasted over the entire internet like that. I don't know why that Xanga posts are picked up on internet search engines once they are there for a while, but for more privacy, I don't let my comments stay on there for very long anymore.
Since you live in California, you can't imagine how strict things are in the South especially nowadays. I live in a small Southern town, and it's so not fair, but they don't approve AT ALL of people talking to others about ANYTHING on the internet with people that they don't know from their own town here, or if they don't already know them from the real world somewhere beforehand. That's just the way they are here. They wouldn't ever approve of a Xanga site either.
They don't like any kind of change whatsoever, and it's SO hard enough for me to live here as it is having different views than most everyone else, so I don't want them to start fussing at me about having at Xanga site and talking to others I only know from the internet instead of talking to only the people that everyone else knows here in my small town.
It's kind of hard to explain, but I have to do things I think is best just in order to be able to get along and survive here where I live. They would fuss at me and get upset if they found my Xanga site, so once I found out that my posts could be accessed by the entire internet, I had to make previous posts private after a while. Luckily, it takes a little bit of time to register in the search engines, so I have time for my posts to be on Xanga for a few days before I make it private after then.
I don't want to use protected postings either because I don't pay for my Xanga site, and with a non-paying membership, it only allows just 10 people to view protected posts, and that's not enough allowed to view it, and I don't want to leave any of my online friends out when I post something, so I found it was best just to post something, leave it up there for a few days for everyone to view, and after that, make it private.
Again, I'm so sorry that I have to do that nowadays, but I had to do it. I hope you understand. I didn't mean to disappoint anyone.
I'm just trying to do things the best I can. I'm just tired of even trying to fight the way things are. I can't do it anymore. I have to just go along because I don't have the strength any longer. I'm just so exhausted. If I have a different opinion about anything anymore, it doesn't matter....I just have to keep it to myself in this small town just in order to survive and keep peace just like all the other VERY few people who feel the same way as I do have always had to do as well in order to survive here.
