He was just a little green ball of clay. But you should see what Gumby can do today!
Kids, don't do this at home, and when on a motorcycle, always remember to wear your helmet. I noticed the only photographs on the main page to the blog were in one entry, and I hadn't posted that many photographs in a while so here is a promised (from about two months ago) gif animation of a "stop motion" full size inflatable plastic gumby riding my old motorcycle into the driveway. Neat, eh? I've got so much stuff to post, and so little time. This "animation" is composed of stills from a stop motion VHS tape I made in 1989. It's finally made it to the web! Gumby was always one of my favorite cartoon characters, along with Betty Boop, of course. I do give Betty Boop her own website on AllThingsMike, but my interest in Gumby was back in the 80s which of course was Pre-Internet. I do still have a lot of the Gumby figurines, not as many as I have Boops, but Gumby is still a favorite animated character. The "original" Gumby (and not the parody which Eddie Murphy popularized on SNL in the 80s) was a stop motion clay animation constructed by Art Clokey in the 60s. And because I'm just not content with only posting "one" photo or image, even though it is an animation, and is sure to be popular, I am also going to show some of the other Gumbys I have when they were in my old room back when I lived with my late friend Bob in the "frat house" in the late 80s. The image above shows a small "mini gumby" figurine.
This image shows two of the "bendable Gumbys". If I were to try to bend them now, their arms would probably fall off. The rubber tends to harden after 10 or 20 years. And in the background is the selfsame 6 foot tall inflatable plastic Gumby which "hung out" in my various places for many years until he popped.
Here Gumby the 6 foot tall inflatable is wearing one of my many cowboy hats. He also has a Mexican shawl (called a "serape") draped around his arms but you can't really see it in this picture. The rooms I had when I lived with Bob were painted "Gumby Green".
