    The 2004 OLYMPICS COMPOSITE COLLECTION

CARLY PATTERSON: ALL AROUND WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS GOLD

Carly Patterson is by far my favorite Olympian this season. I believe right now she has as much name recognition as Mary Lou Retton did in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She's a petite ball of energy, and although the Men's Gymnastics efforts show a lot more strength and power, I've always been a bit of a fan of the Women's Gymnastics events. Now that I'm an old man, it seems somewhat eerie to "fall in love" with sixteen year old girls who could  be my daughter (or granddaughter) but I did "fall in love" with Carly and Courtney on the American team, Anna Pavlova on the Russian team, and Monica Rosu and Catalina Ponor on the Romanian team. I didn't get any images of Paul Hamm saved from the Tivo coverage until after I decided to do this project, so don't have any Hamm brothers photos from which to build a cameo image composite. I got these of Carly during the last day of competition, after the medals had been given out, and she was participating in showy routines with low lighting and musical accompaniment. These images are from the floor exercises. Full size image of Carly Patterson is here.

    JOANNA HAYES: 100M HURDLES GOLD

When the favored Canadian hurdles athlete Perdita Felicien collided with the first hurdle, Joanna Hayes of Los Angeles found herself with the Gold Medal in the race. She barely realized, then in stages, showd great emotion, prior to taking her victory run. Back at the first hurdle, Perdita slumped on the track, obviously beaten by her own mistake, which also put another hurdler out of business. Joanna's win was another for the States, and another passing of the torch to a new generation of Olympics champions. Full Size image of Joanna Hayes is here.

(NOTE: Composite artwork is by me: Michael F. Nyiri, using images from the NBC television network. The Olympic symbol is property of the International Olympics Committee. The original image of a Greek discus thrower was taken from a museum website. I created the graphics myself in the Picture Publisher and Windows Draw program.)
